USS CALCATERRA (DER 390)
Fleet Post Office
New York, 09501
8 July 1970
Dear Calcaterra Friends and Relatives,
We are now back in Key West, and hope to remain here for another month. Our new operating schedule is out but it is very vague. I still expect that we will deploy the first week in August.
Calcaterra returned to Key West on Sunday, 21 June and spent the first week enjoying early liberty. Friday was devoted to a personnel inspection and a family picnic. BMC George W. NUNNERY was the Inspecting Officer. After the inspection, I presented him with a ship’s plaque in honor of his four years of outstanding service aboard CALCATERRA. I also presented Unit Commendation Ribbons to ETN3 Juan A. DELTORO and SN Charles W. TUCKER for their service aboard USS William V. PRATT (DLG13).
At the picnic Friday I presented a framed picture to Mrs. Nunnery for her work in Family Services – On 14 July at 0900 there will be a seminar presented by Family Services. There will be speakers or written information on many subjects that are of particular interest and importance since we will be deploying. Refreshments will be served and free baby-sitting at the Navy Nursery will be provided. For Information and reservations call 296-35112, extension 207.
During the month we again lost some shipmates. STG3 William Schaffer and RM1 William Swift were released from active duty; EN1 Delbert Reeve was transferred to U.S. Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Va., and SN Kenneth Buckless was transferred to USS Jonas INGRAM (DD938). We were fortunate to receive RMSN Herschel Belch from Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, MD., SN Charles Tucker from USS William V. PRATT (DLG13), STG2 Robert Middleton from Fleet Sonar School, Key West, MR3 Timothy Shultz from USS BUSHNELL (AS15) and RDSN Carl Rain bolt from Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.
We have requested authority to conduct a family cruise on Thursday, 23 July with Tuesday, 28 July as the alternate date. When we get it settled, I will put out the word so you can make your plans to attend. I would also like to have another picnic before we leave.
I will put out another family gram soon and will cover the deployment schedule (if known), the family cruise, and provide some phone numbers and people to contact in case you have any problems while the ship is gone. If you have any problems or questions feel free to write at any time.
Sincerely,
Signed: (Howard B. Graff)
Commanding Officer
